The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest
Since 1976, the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest has given many owners the chance to prove that their dog is the ugliest around. Part of the Sonoma-Marin Fair, the contest is usually scheduled for the last week of June, and is held in Petaluma, California. The competition certainly brings in many fans every year. Each year, there are 2,000-3,000 people desperate to see who the winner will be.
What Does The Winner’s Owner Win?
If you are interested in entering your ugly dog into the next contest, the prize for the winner is a trophy, a check for $1,000, and of course, bragging rights. Fortunately, the dog will also benefit from the win. After all, they should because there would be no win without a dog right? They often win treats. For example, in 2012, a winner named “Mugly” received a years worth of dog treats.

According to an article on Ask.com, in 2012, there were at least 525 million dogs roaming the planet. In the same year, in the United states alone, there were over 73 million. So of course, it is possible that there are many more ugly dogs out there that have never entered the contest. Perhaps, there are some that are uglier than any dog that has ever competed in these contests.

Li’l Sam: Winner Three Times In A Row (2003-2005)
Sam or Li’l Sam (November 7, 1990 – November 18, 2005) is a three time (2003–2005) champion from Santa Barbara, California. By looking at the image shown above, you can certainly see exactly why he was chosen to be the winner three years in a row. His extremely unusual and of course, ugly face is what made him become famous not just in the United States, but all over the world.
Sam was a pure-bred Chinese Crested hairless dog. He was blind and unfortunately, due to heart complications, he was euthanized on November 18, 2005. Sam’s death has given other dogs the chance at winning a title. If he had competed in every contest during his lifetime, he probably would have never lost. Some say Sam is a cross between the Crypt Keeper, and an ugly gremlin.

Miss Ellie: 2009 Winner In The Pedigree Category
This is Miss Ellie (c. 1993 – June 1, 2010). She was an American Chinese Crested Dog. Like Sam, Miss Ellie was also blind. In the 2009 World’s Ugliest Dog competition, she was beat by a dog named Pabst (who was a boxer mix) in a runoff to take the title. Miss Ellie lived to the age of 17.

Quasi Modo: 2015 Winner
Quasi Modo is a pit bull-Dutch shepherd mix and the winner of the 2015 contest. A veternarian adopted her from a shelter. Named after the The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Quasi Modo suffers from a rare birth defect called short-spine syndrome. At first glance, one might think she is a hyena instead of a dog. Despite her birth defect, her owners say she feels no pain and is very healthy.
It didn’t take long for Quasi Modo to achieve fame and recognition after becoming the champion in 2015. She even made an appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show for a hilarious makeover.
Despite past winners receiving a price of $1,000, Quasi Modo’s owner received a $1,500 prize.
Sweepee Rambo: 2016 Winner

The winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog in 2016 is Sweepee Rambo. Do you see a slight resemblance to Li’l Sam? This dog is a Chihuahua/Chinese Crested mix. She is bug-eyed, blind, and also virtually toothless. For the victory, winner Jason Wurtz received $1,500 and a trophy.
Apparently, the dog was purchased as a gift to Wurtz’s ex-wife. However, when the couple separated, instead of the dog going to his ex, it went to him. The reason is because she thought the dog was too ugly. Now that Sweepee Rambo is famous, she may regret letting her go.
