Today we are going to talk about Rapunzel syndrome (named after Rapunzel in the German fairy tale published back in 1812). It is a rare intestinal condition in humans and results from ingesting hair (trichophagia). Trichophagia is sometimes associated with trichotillomania.

People who suffer with Rapunzel syndrome experience symptoms such as small or large bowel obstruction. They may also get a hairball (called a trichobezoar) that is located in the stomach, with its tail in the small bowel and/or in the right colon. It makes a lot of sense to name the syndrome after Rapunzel, who had some extremely long hair. Since the human gastrointestinal tract cannot digest human hair, depending on the severity, the hairball may need to be surgically removed.

The Teen With A Massive Hairball

A 15-year-old girl in India has a hair-swallowing addiction that sent her straight to the hospital. Her addiction is so severe, she not only ate her own hair, but also the hair of her classmates. It caused a hairball that measured 5 feet in length. Hairballs are uncommon in humans (especially this size).

Due to a protruding stomach, nausea caused by the hairball, being unable to eat, and severe pain, the teen’s parents chose to take her to get checked. The massive hairball (including a sizable lesion) was seen in a CT scan. Doctors were concerned she might not make it through the surgery. 92-Year-Old Woman Delivers 50-Year-Old Baby

Estela Melendez is a 92-year-old woman from Chile. For over a half century, she was unaware that there was a calcified fetus in her womb. After getting X-rays for a recent fall, doctors discovered the fetus. The X-ray showed the fetus weighed approximately 4.4 pounds. Over 50 years ago, Melendez claimed that a doctor said she had a tumor in her stomach. Unfortunately, it was never removed.

So what could be the actual explanation for the remains of the fetus? Local reports from Chilean news outlets say one explanation is that it was the result of a mismanaged abortion. According to Melendez, doctors refused to have it removed. The other is that doctors reportedly told her she had cancer and would be dead in three days. Therefore, the doctors we unable to operate on her.

Unfortunately, Melendez will have to live the remainder of her life with the fetus inside of her. Due to the potential risks of operating on a 92-year-old woman, doctors will not attempt to remove the fetus.

This extremely rare phenomenon is called lithopedion. The condition occurs when a developing fetus dies during an abdominal pregnancy and then mummifies outside the uterus. According to Wikipedia, it is so rare that there have only been 300 known cases of stone baby in the world.

Believe it or not, but in Hong Kong, there was a baby girl born pregnant with her own siblings. This incredibly rare condition is called fetus-in-fetu. It is so rare, it will only occur in about 1 in every 500,000 live births, and has been reported in about 200 cases in medical literature. Why it actually happens, remains a mystery. But according to the World Health Organization, instead of being a normally developing fetus, a tiny fetus that is found within an infant is considered to be a highly developed teratoma (a tumor). Surprisingly, doctors had suspected the fetuses in the baby girl were not a teratoma, but instead the remains of sibling twins that were absorbed during the pregnancy.

Dr. Yu Kai-man is an obstetrician and gynecologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong. Yu Kai-man was chosen to take a look at the baby girl’s so-called tumor. Though the mother’s prenatal ultrasound revealed an unusual mass, the doctors were unable to determine exactly what it was.

The Discovery Of The Two Fetuses

When the baby girl was just three weeks old, she was required to get a surgical operation. This is when surgeons had found the two fetuses between her liver and her kidney. So how much did they weigh? The case report said that one fetus weighed just 0.3 ounces and the other was 0.5 ounces. Their weight corresponds to approximately 8 and 10 weeks’ gestation. Amazingly, both had an umbilical cord that linked to a placenta-like mass that was located in the baby girl’s belly.

Where Did The Fetuses Come From?

Of course, it is impossible for the baby girl to have conceived the fetus herself. But according to researchers, it is likely that she was once one of triplets. It is still unclear exactly why the two smaller fetuses were absorbed into the body of the remaining girl. But it is possible that fetus-in-fetu is similar to a more common phenomenon called vanishing twin syndrome. In many twin pregnancies, one twin is completely absorbed and then “vanishes” into the body of the other twin.
